February Baseline: The Ick, Tulsa & The Experiment

The Baseline

What's good at Goodtype...

The new year has been quite the drama queen, am I right?!
We've been thinking of our friends in LA, and we're so inspired by the many ways the creative community has come together to show support.

We didn't send a baseline last month because it felt like there was a lot of noise in our own inboxes so we figured we'd spare you. So ICYMI, we've decided to dive into our own creative practice this year in what we're calling "The Experiment". We running experiments to find the things that make us happy and make us money as artists and we're documenting it all.

We're also speaking at a FREE design conference alongside 20 other creatives including Aaron Draplin, Kristy Campbell & Annie Atkins. 🎤

We're also working on the lineup for this years Kernference (YAY), making new art for our licensing portfolio, wrapping up our next Skillshare class, and we're heading to Tulsa tomorrow to speak to The Art Directors Club. Let's GOOOO!

SEASON "TWO"

What if I tried to make 100k from my art this year?

LESSON LEARNED

We keep having a conversation in our office (aka our zoom room) about priorities. Whenever we look through our list and figure out what tasks to tackle, we ask "will this bring us any joy?". Sometimes we find ourselves chasing virality, or measuring our success in our productivity, which kinda gives us the ick. Being able to acknowledge that is at least one step in the right direction.

The Baseline Productivity Hack Hangover Sometimes it feels like everyone and their mother has a productivity hack that's going to "totally revolutionize your workflow." Work 4 hours a week. Work in 20 minute sprints. Only open your email on Tuesdays. Work in a dark room. Work outside. Train the robots to do all your tasks. Do it all yourself. Walk 20,000 steps. Eat your vegetables.... It's a tornado of (somewhat?) good intentions, coming at us from all sides, all the time. How can we be...

Hi, Reader! Today is the day. Follow Your Art is officially out in the world! We've been working toward this moment for over 3 years, and we genuinely cannot believe it's finally here. If you've been with us for any part of this journey, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. Here's something we don't talk about enough: the first week of a book launch changes everything. Every preorder, every same-week purchase, every share tells retailers and libraries that this book is worth carrying....

Niche down, they said. Pick one style. One aesthetic. One lane. Make it recognizable. Make it fit in a box someone else can label. We tried. A lot of artists we know tried. And almost every single one of them ended up feeling more lost, more stuck, and more disconnected from their work than ever before. The goal should never be to shrink yourself down until you "fit" in someone else's box. You're a complex, layered, curious creative person with a lifetime of influences, instincts, and ideas,...
