"Niche down" is the worst advice we ever got

Niche down, they said.

Pick one style. One aesthetic. One lane. Make it recognizable. Make it fit in a box someone else can label.

We tried. A lot of artists we know tried. And almost every single one of them ended up feeling more lost, more stuck, and more disconnected from their work than ever before.

The goal should never be to shrink yourself down until you "fit" in someone else's box.

You're a complex, layered, curious creative person with a lifetime of influences, instincts, and ideas, and no single aesthetic is ever going to hold all of that.

The goal is to ZOOM OUT until you can finally see the full picture, and that's what our new book, Follow Your Art, is about.

​Follow Your Art, out March 17 (less than a week away!), isn’t a guide to finding your niche. It’s a full-color workbook that helps you uncover your creative voice and create from who you really are—not who you think you should be.

We wrote it because we were tired of watching talented artists contort themselves into boxes that were never built for them.
