The Baseline: Marching Into March with Goodtype

The Baseline

Our Journey to 100k

Remember how we broke down how we're planning to make 100k this year from our art? Well, we've been putting pedal to the metal and we're on our way!

We've dipped our toes into some client work, but we had a lot of prep to do first, like updating our website, creating fresh new work for our portfolio, and planning our outreach strategy.

Here's what we did in Jan & Feb:

So, while we had to focus more on the preparation than on the work, we're feeling a lot of clarity and motivation now that we've got some major pieces of the puzzle off our plates. Can't wait to dive in to outreach and landing some new clients this month (crossing fingers!).

Lessons Learned

We've been posting our work every week day on our personal feeds (@katiemadethat and @ilanagriffo) and observing what happens...WOOF. We're looking for the answers to some big (and small) questions like...is social media worth the grind? If so, how can we make it more accessible and less demanding? What feels good or fun to post? What feels crappy? What do we get out of posting at the end of the day and how can we tweak our process to be better for our mental health and our audience?

We're almost two weeks in, and the numbers are humbling! We'll report back with our findings, but so far, we're keeping the stakes low - it's an experiment!

The Baseline Productivity Hack Hangover Sometimes it feels like everyone and their mother has a productivity hack that's going to "totally revolutionize your workflow." Work 4 hours a week. Work in 20 minute sprints. Only open your email on Tuesdays. Work in a dark room. Work outside. Train the robots to do all your tasks. Do it all yourself. Walk 20,000 steps. Eat your vegetables.... It's a tornado of (somewhat?) good intentions, coming at us from all sides, all the time. How can we be...

Hi, Reader! Today is the day. Follow Your Art is officially out in the world! We've been working toward this moment for over 3 years, and we genuinely cannot believe it's finally here. If you've been with us for any part of this journey, thank you. From the bottom of our hearts. Here's something we don't talk about enough: the first week of a book launch changes everything. Every preorder, every same-week purchase, every share tells retailers and libraries that this book is worth carrying....

Niche down, they said. Pick one style. One aesthetic. One lane. Make it recognizable. Make it fit in a box someone else can label. We tried. A lot of artists we know tried. And almost every single one of them ended up feeling more lost, more stuck, and more disconnected from their work than ever before. The goal should never be to shrink yourself down until you "fit" in someone else's box. You're a complex, layered, curious creative person with a lifetime of influences, instincts, and ideas,...
